Wild Mountain Swine Wild Mountain Swine ttto "Wild Mountain Thyme", Jimmy McPeake (http://mudcat.org/@displaysong.cfm?SongID=7886)
O the summer time is coming And the bees are sweetly blooming And the wild mountain swine Grow among the purple heather. Will you go, lassie, go? And we'll all go together, To hunt wild mountain swine, All around the mutant heather. Will you go, lassie, go?
I will build my love a tower, By yon queer crystal fountain, And round about will fly All the otters of the mountain. Will you go, jasons, go? And we'll all go together, To hunt wild mountain swine, All around the glowing heather. Will you go, lassie, go?
If my true love will not go, I will surely find another, To hunt wild mountain swine, All around the orange heather. Will you go, jasons, go? And we'll all go together, To hunt wild mountain swine, All around the changing heather. Will you go, lassie, go?
As you may have already realized, this song will be collected on the planet Mirabile, so well described by Janet Kagan.

Filk in the Bookstore
so I'm out Christmas shopping yesterday and, my family being the bookofiles they are, I spent lots of time in the book store in various sections. At one point, I found Tanya Huff's book- and it definitely had a bimbo on the cover of her book! Then I rounded the corner of the shelf and saw Seanan McGuire's "Rosemary and Rue" looking right at me (seriously- front over facing out, on the eye level shelf- great placement!). THEN when I turned I saw the Tolkien section. A certain book therein caught my eye.... Come on, sing it with me.... "I fell asleep reading the Silmarillion..." so all in all, a very filky shopping trip for me :-) |

LiveJournal Major Notes: Notes, Tweaks, Bug Kills, LJ_Cares!
Notes augmented
We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!
Product tweaks and bug kill
- In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
- If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
- The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
- If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
- If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
- Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)
New FCK fixes rich text editor!
- We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
- When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
- RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
- An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
- The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers
LiveJournal Cares
We’re pleased to introduce you to lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

From Daily Rumi Although this reed pen is in fact insensible, of a different substance than the writer, yet it is an intimate friend. Likewise, every tool of a craftsman, though lifeless, is the familiar friend of the human spirit. LITANY AGAINST FEAR I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Network Maintenance: Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 04:00-06:00 UTC/GMT EDIT@08:16 UTC/GMT. Wow. That was ugly. I expected it to go for 30 minutes and have maybe 1 minute of broken connectivity. Instead it lasted over 4 hours and we had 10 minutes of downtime directly related to the load balancer upgrades and then another 5-10 minutes of downtime when our primary Pingback database server crashed and the secondary couldn't take over; which could have been indirectly caused by the network upgrade missing a self-VIP. Anyways, we're up, we're working, the load balancers are barely breaking a sweat right now and I need some food and a shot of whiskey. I don't even *like* whiskey!! Thanks mhwest and dnewhall for helping out! --- On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice. Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials. We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait! As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work. |

Ping MaryKay and/or Jordin Kare
I did the Aerospace Education Current Event presentation last night at the local Civil Air Patrol squadron meeting, and used the coverage of LaserMotive's recent win in the Space Elevator Games. I'll be doing a bulletin-board poster with more back-story on the Games, and I'm trying to figure out if I've got a recording of Jordin's song about the cargo-launch lasers. Only I'm going blank on the title. I'd like to include a printout of the lyric on the bulletin board poster, as well as actually *learning* the song. Is it recorded on anything that is still in-print? |

Looking for Video Footage of Filk Circles Hello, everyone. You haven’t heard from me in a while, but I’m still lurking on the sidelines of fandom and filkdom as I try to fulfill some difficult requirements for my graduate degree. As some of you know (and, perhaps, more of you don’t, since I haven't been able to attend many conventions over the past year), I’m a PhD student in musicology at the U of M Ann Arbor, and I’ve been working in baby steps with filk from an ethnomusicological perspective. I’m hoping that, though filk must remain somewhat of a “minor” in my degree (my “major," at this point, dealing with 18th century French parody song and comic opera), I can also be involved in documenting and educating the world about filk and it’s unique status as a postmodern folk music. As such, I’ve been presented with a useful opportunity in my current U.S. Music course: I and my team have been asked to create a short (5-10 min.) educational video about a topic in American music that will then be posted on the American Music Channel in YouTube. (See http://www.youtube.com/user/AmericanMusicTeam for examples of previous videos posted on this channel.) My team (Ryan, Hannah, and I) have decided to make a quick informative film about filk. Don’t worry—I do realize that I need to have any video footage or audio clips we use authorized by those involved in said video or audio, and I have waivers for most of the video I currently possess. I plan to contact anyone whose image, voice or music we’d like to use regardless. Here’s where we need help, though: because I didn’t want to videotape anyone for whom I didn’t have a video release, I did not videotape any live filking at the conferences I have attended. I have concerts, but not filk circles. Does anyone have video footage of filk circles that would be usable for this purpose? It would be best, I think, to use footage for which it would be easy to gain permission from everyone included in the film—so, footage in which we know the names and contact information for everyone whose face or music shows up. Or, if someone has footage for which they have already been given permission to use in this manner (i.e., posting online) by all involved, that should work as well. My team and I would be grateful for your help, and we do hope to put together something that the community will be proud of. This isn’t a study so much as it is a beginner’s guide to filk, and we want to make sure that we represent you well. Thanks! I’m looking forward to your video footage suggestions if you have them, as well as your thoughts on the project as a whole. All the best, Jessica Getman (musicahumana) jessgetman@gmail.com |

Today and the weekend.....
Just cruised today. Took a sanity break. We'll see how it flies tomorrow at work. Anyway you slice it, it's going to impact my wallet negatively come Saturday....(sigh)...watched tele, raked up some leaves, sat outside and watched more fall, blogged, ate, made tea. I needed that. Sunday: Hit the Babylon Gun Show in the morning. Pathetic. Same faces, same stuff, only the prices change. (excelsior, ever upward, is the NYS motto after all)....But I had fun cruising there and back with an old "Blues Brothers" tape blasting....afters, I swung by Bros. Grim and helped out with "Assault III" painting. It was fun. Pleasant way to spend a day. Shot the breeze with Matt and Linda, chatted with Izzy, and with Gil, got my ear chewed off by a VERY enthusiastic kid, and chatted with his dad Voke for a bit....(Yes... Voke. That is his real name.) Later I headed home, ordered Chinese with HM Mark, and Laurie, and hung out with the usual Sunday night crew. Ended the evening sitting with HM Linda watching Adult Swim. Venture Bros. How I do love you so...... Saturday: St. Andrews. Damned good event. Good turn out, superlative food, good conversation, fun court, lots of friendly faces, interesting heavy List, VERY interesting light list. The sight is GORGEOUS!!! I wanna steal it!! I was there from 11AM until closing. Just a perfect example of a great SCA event. Ran into lots of folks I haven't seen in a bit. Ran into 1 that was.... a bit uncomfortable....to see. Got 1 piece of very sad news. My sincere condolence goes out to lady Bree on the loss of her daughter. I was proud that all of Daves work as Senechal was finally recognized. Congratulations LORD David!!!! The kings royal proclamation that "The Princess Bride" is now period... was priceless!! I was sitting all the way in the back row and I could actually hear certain folks teeth grinding.....(snicker)....His majesty is loud, abrasive and a thug... I LIKE HIM!!!! I think it was exceptionally cool of him to make Sour Pete a THL on the spot.... (WELL damned deserved for the work on that door!!!) Had fun talking LL with Firebow and Sis out front. I'm really really jazzed about getting qualled, I was just DROOLING to try playing with the LL great swords they were fighting with....Just a top notch event. I'm so glad I decided to go. So... I'm wondering...
Oh my filkish friends... Some of you may know that my selection of products in Firefly Cargo Bay is becoming more filk related all the time. Plus, there's the ever growing (once Cafe Press gets their site fixed) filk designs in the the original FFCB shop . What I would like to know- as I look at the beginning of 2010's potential con dealers' rooms for me--- WHAT WOULD *YOU*LIKE TO SEE ON A DEALERS' TABLE? As filkers and musicians and singers and fans of music in general, that is. What products and such would you like to see when you walk into a dealers' room that you currently do not see? Or, if I carry some of those products (like the buttons and book marks and tote bags, etc, I already have) what designs or sayings or images would you like to see on them? I am open to any and all suggestions, as I'm looking to expand my product offerings. Post here or email me directly at earthgirl at kos dot net TANX! Current Mood: curious |

Thom Merrilin - Forgot About Thom (f/ Mat Cauthon)
Last week a friend of mine made an offhand comment, and I was (for lack of a better word) inspired. For several hours I had difficulty thinking of anything else, and late Friday night I released what all three fans of both Dr. Dre and Robert Jordan have been awaiting for years: possibly the world's first Wheel of Time gangsta rap. ultimatepsi suggests that many of you may enjoy it: http://londo.livejournal.com/194051.html Lyrics contain most of the profanity you expect from gangsta rap, but are otherwise SFW. In related news, Eminem is really clever, and matching his rhyme schemes is hard, but ultimately satisfying. (Comments here disabled in a shameless attempt to shunt them all to my personal journal and cross-pollinate discussion, comments there very much welcome.) |

Why can't the day just stay pleasant?
Tired day. Monday is habitually sleep deprived. Tension headache on and off all day too. Stops weren't bad. Manhattan, Glen Head, Bay Shore, Farmingville. I was in a decent mood most of the day. But then I came back to the shop. The problem, as it was, is, and always will be, was with management. So tired of it. Been looking. Nothing open in any field I'm interested in. I have to tough it out until the economy rebounds, or I need to be really, stupidly, unrealistically lucky. Not holding my breath for that. I had plans. I wanted to have a Guy Fawkes day party on Thursday evening. Just a little gather for some friends. I canceled it. I had to. I put out an invitation that covered at minimum, 300 people. I got 3 responses. And 1 had strings attached. But that's not all. I asked my Manager for the day off. I haven't had a day off that didn't involve me being sick, or recovering from surgery in so long I can't remember when the last one was. I was told no. My manager said that If I wanted to stay home on Thursday, I had to call in sick. He realizes I have NO sick days left. So by calling in, I would be costing myself AN ENTIRE DAYS PAY. But wait, there's more!!! In the craziness of last weekend, I put aside money for my car insurance, but I forgot to pull rent money out. I did that today. This left me with 35 dollars for the week. That was the final straw. I literally couldn't afford to get the fixings for the dinner I wanted to make for folks. Done. All she wrote...... I'm angry, frustrated, and depressed. You know, Like I seemingly spend MOST of my time being..... And I'm getting tired.... ( Read more... )Great huh? TC (PS, In a final stupid note upon the day. The sound on the TV doesn't work. Mute is not on, the volumes are both working, it worked this morning, I tried rebooting, Nothing. I don't watch a lot of TV any more, but had planned on sitting down, and watching some of the Tivo'd stuff tonight....(sigh) Current Mood: depressedCurrent Music: None.... |

Weekend update post, take 2.
Saturday: Busy. 3 service calls right on top of each other. Stupid shit mostly. Managed to stop in at MAA and talk to Jim. He showed me a flyer for up coming Ospreys. LOTS of very cool stuff. Picked up 2 while there. War Elephants, and The Belgian Army in WW1. I was planning on going out to Massapequa to visit friends, but since I have the work van, the prospect of having to take 27 all the way out was daunting. Then the rain came, my arthritis attacked, and I was in agony. Friends called later in the evening to invite me to a Halloween party, but I was just hurting too much. pity, as from reports on LJ today, it was a good one.... I was bad. I over ate at lunch, and I MASSIVELY over ate at dinner last night. I have to curb this. ( Read more... ) Sunday: Productive day. House work, yard work, errands. Fixed my favorite lamp, put a latch on the cabinet door that has been loose since we moved in 12 years ago. It's bodged right now, but I'll make a sheet metal hasp for it this week at work.
